Solipsisms

Scott Robinson ScienSonic SS13

CD Price: $15.00 - plus shipping ($3 domestic, $14.50 international)

"Is it solipsistic around here, or is it just me?"  -- Anonymous wiseacre

We’ve all done it at one time or another: wondered if the whole world, and everyone in it, might be just the creation of our own mind. A true solipsist (they are rare, but one sits in the White House as I write this) believes that only they are truly real. Everything -- and everyone -- else is just part of an elaborate stage set surrounding their own singular existence.

Creative people often indulge in a more benign form of solipsism, in which it is necessary to tune out the outer world so that the inner can come forth. Most artists are well-acquainted with that feeling of the world dropping away as they work, while a new reality is spun and shaped in their hands. For myself, it often feels as if I am left alone with just the Music, locked in an eternal dance to which we return, again and again, over a lifetime.

This set, the first unaccompanied show I’ve ever done on a single instrument, marked the beginning of my 2016 residency at the Stone (a week of 12 sets of gradually increasing size, culminating with the 16-piece “Orchestra of the Impossible”). I decided not to think about it too much -- to just walk out with the C melody, relax, and let whatever sprang to mind come out. The entire set is presented here just as it happened, pauses and all… except that most of the applause was removed so as not to break the flow.

Creative music gives you, the creative listener, the chance to step into the center of things, dance the dance, and remake the world around your mind. So come on in, and enjoy this Music. She and I could use the company.

Flow States

Marshall Allen, Roscoe Mitchell, Milford Graves, Scott Robinson ScienSonic SS12

CD Price: $15.00 - plus shipping ($3 domestic, $14.50 international)

This meeting took place at ScienSonic Laboratories in Teaneck, NJ on April 21, 2015 (the day after the Heliosonic Toneways session). This recording is significant in that it presents the first music Roscoe Mitchell ever played with either Marshall Allen or Milford Graves. It also represents a bit of a departure for me personally, as Milford Graves is so far the only artist to appear on ScienSonic with whom I have not previously performed as a sideman. It has long been a dream to play music with Professor Graves, so I took the plunge… or perhaps "lift-off" would be a better term. As the professor said to me after the date, "Man, at one point you went so far out there, we weren't sure if you were coming back!" Well, it took 4 ½ years, but at least I made it back in time to finally mix and present this music. Everything was recorded in one open room with no separation or barriers of any kind, as suggested by Mr. Graves, and is presented here in the order it was played. Scott Robinson, Sept. 2019

"The groove was good & I think it was a kind of historical thing." Milford Graves

Soundscape 1979

Roscoe Mitchell, Gerald Oshita, Thomas Buckner ScienSonic SS11

CD Price: $15.00 - plus shipping ($3 domestic, $14.50 international)

The seeds of this startling music were planted back in 1965, when two remarkable musicians living in the Bay Area first met Roscoe Mitchell, who was passing through California with the beginnings of a group that would later become the renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago. Gerald Oshita, a composer, rare woodwind specialist and master of extended techniques such as multiphonics, and Thomas Buckner, a classically-trained baritone singer and fearless improviser, were a natural fit. In the year prior to this recording, the two of them met every morning - five days a week, for a year - to practice improvisation and develop their ideas.

In the summer of 1979, while Roscoe was Composer-In-Residence at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studios in Woodstock, NY, he invited Gerald to teach one of the composer workshops he was curating there. Traditionally, each teacher gave a solo concert at the end of the workshop, to which he or she could invite a guest performer. Gerald chose to invite Thomas, and the two of them presented Marche, one of the improvisationally-based pieces they had been working on. Roscoe was sufficiently impressed that he approached them after the concert with the idea of forming a trio. Roscoe and Gerald were already scheduled to share a concert at Verna Gillis’ Soundscape performance loft in Manhattan later that month, so Thomas was added and a trio program was put together.

This initial meeting took place in Soundscape's first year of operation, and is heard here for the very first time thanks to the recent discovery of the 1/4" tape reel -- recorded by sculptor Brad Graves -- among Gerald Oshita's possessions (Gerald died unexpectedly in 1992; his work is sadly undocumented and under-recognized). The Soundscape concert presented solos, duos and a piece by the entire trio, and represents the very first efforts of this groundbreaking group (which eventually became known as "SPACE").

17 months later, the trio -- by then well-honed and fully unified -- recorded New Music for Woodwinds and Voice, an astonishing document of a new and creative music that utterly defies boundaries between composition and improvisation, jazz and concert music, standard and non-standard instrumentation… before it became fashionable to do so. As a composer/improviser myself, I can say that this amazing recording showed those of us who were paying attention what is possible.

ScienSonic Laboratories is proud and honored to present the previously unheard, first recorded meeting of this historically significant and under-documented group.

Heliosonic Toneways

The Heliosonic Tone-tette ScienSonic SS10

CD Price: $15.00 - plus shipping ($3 domestic, $14.50 international)

On April 20, 1965, one of the most astonishing recordings in the history of creative music took place at Richard Alderson's RLA Studio in New York City. The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, featuring the enigmatically beautiful bass marimba (played by Sun Ra himself), sounds like no other record made by anyone, ever. Heliocentric Worlds, Vol. 2, with Ra on "tuned bongos" and clavioline, followed soon after.

To honor the 50th anniversary of this musical milestone, ScienSonic Laboratories convened a remarkable group including two important, longtime Sun Ra Arkestra members: Marshall Allen (probably the only surviving member of the Heliocentric sessions), and Danny Ray Thompson (who joined the band just two years later, in 1967). The goal was to record a project of new and original music, using the distinctive instrumentation and sonic character of the original albums -- including the bass marimba heard on Vol. 1, as well as the boo bams and clavioline heard on Vol. 2. This project could only have taken place at ScienSonic Laboratories, which owns not only boo bams and clavioline, but the actual bass marimba that Sun Ra himself played. Alderson was even tracked down to come in and record the project.

On April 20, 2015, Allen, Alderson, and the bass marimba were reunited at ScienSonic Laboratories for the first time since 1965 - exactly fifty years later to the day. The instruments Ra played (with a 1950s Wurlitzer electronic piano substituting for electronic celeste) were handled by Marshall and Scott Robinson. Two incredible albums of music resulted, corresponding to the sonic profiles of the two different Heliocentric volumes.

This is not a re-creation or "tribute" project. This is completely original music, but made with the sounds and sensibilities used to realize the astonishing vision of The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra. May these become your worlds as well.

Creative Music for 3 Bass Saxophones

Scott Robinson, JD Parran, Vinny Golia ScienSonic SS03

"An unprecedented quartet - the brainchild of Scott Robinson, a multi-instrumentalist whose talent and imagination know no bounds. I am talking about three bass saxophones plus percussion. Each of the three proves himself an accomplished handler of a horn with a surprising range... and great warmth. Quite a sight, quite a sound... consistently interesting." Dan Morgenstern, jazz writer, former DownBeat and Metronome editor, NEA Jazz Master

Few people realize that the first saxophone ever made was a bass sax. The bass saxophone is the progenitor and patriarch of the entire saxophone family, and remains, in many ways, its most noble and eloquent member. This music was designed to present some of the wide spectrum of expressive possibilities of the instrument, and features three of its most dedicated practitioners.

Recorded live at the Rubin Museum of Art, NYC, April 15 2011 (cited as a ""Best Concert of the Year"" in The New York City Jazz Record).
